Yea thats right about what they charge, i try to let them do the first one, then i do the ones on the 5000 and them do the 10000 and so on to save some cash. But i feel better letting them go over it ever other time in case i miss something .
First 1000 is free at my dealer as long as you bought the bike there. The ticket says around $260, but they waive it for you. Even switching to synthetic. Dealer is in Peoria, Illinois.
I'm right under 900 miles myself...and I've been curious about this. I won't need to do anything until the spring, but...I heard that if you DON'T have Harley do the first service, it voids the warranty?
Is there any truth to this? If not, I'll just change the oil myself...
That warranty threat is BS Federal law trumps whatever the HD dealer tells you about warrant. After the 1,000 mile service I have done all the service and some major repairs on my bike. I recommend the dealer do the 1,000 mile service. It is the final manufacturing check. And it is much more involved that an oil change. When I get a new bike. The 1,000 mile service will be done at the dealer.
Price sounds about like normal. After the 1,000 mile service, I suggest purchasing a Service Manual, a motorcycle jack, a few tools that are unique to HD and do your own maintenance.
Anybody know how far you can go into 1k before they start being uptight about the warranty? I'll probably be around 1300 miles before I can get it in for the 1k service...

Wow - My 1K service was free. I did pay to upgrade to Syn oil but that was all. And to respond to a previous poster, I live in Sunny Florida so it seems different dealers different deals.
Change your oil before your trip. Get that nasty chit outta there. Do the 1K service when you get back. Call now and see about an appointment. Maybe that'll make you feel better about warranty fears while you're on the trip.
Or, do it yourself and save your receipts. Your warranty will stay intact.
