Sportster is entry level budget bike
How many times you hear that? I hear it every now and then from strangers. Every time same jargon. Well my counter jargon might not be any better (normally I just laugh and ride away), but hey, I have been on the other side, I had 6 months FXST. Just not my thing. When I noticed that is not for me, I test drove all variations of above 2000 big twins, softies and Dynas, but no, something was missing. Maybe they just were too big (I'm 6 feet) and I have always admired the compact Sportie, with that 3.3gal tank. It just makes the bike look so awesome from sideways. Side view forms descending from the handlebar nicely to the rear.
And other thing, No Japanese have copied the Sportster, other Softies and Dynas etc, they have tried
Just my IMHO

Derisive envy can be entertaining. All my buddies with big twins save one have their bikes up for sale. They keep asking me if I'm ready to "trade up." I resist the urge to laugh at them.
Put lots of miles on the Sporty yesterday running 87 octane at 63 mpg. That's the best mileage yet for me, but understandable given the bike was warmed up at fueling and road conditions were ideal.
When I find a better bike, I will buy it.
