By drilling a slot into the clip, you don't need to fasten the zip tie. The zip tie head prevents it from falling through and I can remove/replace it with the seat on. I leave it sticking out a little so I can grab it with my finger tips.

Why not get the new clips for free from the dealer?

That bike's an '04 purchased in '03. That zip tie has been on there a long time. If I think about it when I'm on the toy run at the dealer, I'll ask about new clips.

Common problem, but easy fix...zip ties, or new clips.

Yup, the zip ties went on the first month I bought my 2005 XL1200R after reading about all the lost covers. The zip ties work!
