I don't see a benefit in going with an add on kick start. I would spend the money and get the relay or whatever fixed for the electric start.
If an 88 has a carb then you are also talking about a choke add on etc. and if you screw up your starting sequence you'll wish you got a push to jump start it.
If you are worried about being stranded, electrically, then practice jump starting by getting a push or rolling down hill.
If your concerned about a battery issue, they have jump start devices that are a little bigger than an iphone and can start you bike 4 or 5 times or a slightly larger one 20 times.
I think the kick is going backwards and really takes away from the look, get the relay fixed.
