my 883, with 1200 jugs, (with too much compression) will do this when hot..
I think it is because of the dual fire ignition..
(front cyl fires 45degrees early along with the back cylinder)
fuel vapors ignite causing piston to push backward.(.backfire out of carb.)
In fact mine broke the starter ring off the clutch basket..
I cured mine , by blipping the throttle a few times, before a hot start..kinda floods the cylinders. and get her spinning before the gas lights off..
another way would be a single fire igniton , or a front cylinder compression release.
OR a guy could re-wire the starter button so that the engine would spin without the killswitch being on = no fire to plugs untill engine is spinning..then turn on killswitch..
all of this is just my opinion ,experiance ..
Owned this sportie since new ...1991 model

The starter clutch gears on the Sporty starters are weak. It's OK for the 883, but the clutch gear won't stand up to the kickback from 1200's higher compression. After going through 2 starter clutches in 24,000 miles, I replace the starter with a stronger 1.4KW "All-*****" brand starter. That was 40,000 miles ago, and no more starter/kickback problems.
BTW, your motor is already Single Fire.

+1 cHarley. I've gone through 4 starter drives (starter clutch) in the last 4 years. It is a common problem with the 1200's. One of the pistons will be near top dead center. When you press the starter button, the spark plug fires before the piston can move up. This causes a kick-back against the starter. I found, if you "tap" the starter button rapidly once on the first, try it will fire the plug without the kick back. This has doubled the life of my last starter.
