You may be running a bit lean too. You can check your plugs. If they're white-ish you need more fuel.

It could also be an exhaust leak...but I would wager you have a leaning issue. Can you see how bad the pipes are discolored under the heat shields?

It almost sounds like you have two different things going on: decel pops (burble, burble, pop, pop, pop, burble) and backfires (burble, BANG, burble). If so, sealing the exhaust can help (and might cure) the backfire, and might help the decel pops, even though they're normal. If sealing the exhaust doesn't cure the issue, talk to a competent mechanic about a tune-up or other possible issues.

No discoloration under the heat shields but header bolts were a bit loose. Also noticed some soot from front header clamp being loose. This should solve the problem. Thanks guys.

I have Screaming Eagle II mufflers on my 883. I have definitly noticed a rise in power. I have not had the problem of backfireing, poping, or any of that stuff. And, Mine is an 02 with a carb., No EFI.

My Brother's Streetbob is EFI, and his bike is always backfireing, coughing, and snorting. This happens mostly when he starts the bike.

I have rode the bike after tightening the header nuts and installing new spark plugs(old plugs still looked new with 4500 miles) and a lot of the popping is gone, but not all.Seems to run just fine though.Actually the plugs are white as if still new with no buildup or discoloration, maybe it is running too lean after all?

Ditch the SE II baffles and get thunder city monster baffles. You will love them.

Yes white is too lean, plugs should be kinda chocolate brown - but not black at all.
