There is a school of thought that use of gear oil in the Tranny/primary can cause premature stater failure. When I was asking about lubes the locale bike mechanic told me that use of gear oils would lead to stater failure. That is not the only place I had heard this...old wives tale...true...?
Who has had the stater fail and what were you using for lube?
+1 - HD now recommends using their Formula+, which is a Gear Oil, in the primary/tranny.
I do however prefer Mobil-1 synthetic Gear Oil over their non-synthetic Citgo Gear Oil.
I ran autotranny fluid in my 01 sportie..for 18 years no failure..
just recently changed to 60-80 weight gear oil..
My 91 has straight cut gears,( first 5-speed) and had a gear whine in all but 5th with the at oil..
now the heavier oil quiets it a little..
no stator failures

65,000 miles on this bike. Mobil-1 15w-50 in the motor, a 5 qt. jug at Walmart is $22.00, and Mobil-1 75-90 Gear Oil in the primary/tranny - $9.00 at Autozone.

Thanks. Walmart doesn't carry it here. I got both at Advance Auto : )
I've replaced 4 starter drives in the last 144,000 km. The starter drives failed every 22-26,000 km, except the last one so far its gone 60,000km. I was running stock gear lube on the first and 20w50 on the others. I don't think the lube has anything to do with it.

That's too bad. But, there is a big difference between a stator and a starter. The OP asked about a stator (although he spelled it with an "e").
No, the lube has nothing to do with your "starter" failures.
