Stage 1, stupid question
What's this stage 1 all about? Can anyone please tell me
what I should purchase in order to be able to upgrade my 1998 XL 1200S?
I read somewhere, that it is possible to get about 80 horsepower
out of this bike by changing the carb jet, exhaust pipes, air box and
ingnition module. However, I do not even wanna think about the price of
the ignition module....

RE: Stage 1, stupid question
The stage 1 would be the K&N intake with the kit to mount it, the slip on mufflers and a rejet to richen things up a bit. It's worth the time and money to do it all at once and you will get about 10 - 15 HP over stock.
The module is optional but does help with a faster ignition curve.

RE: Stage 1, stupid question
SimonW,
Stage 1 normally refers to a free-flowing air cleaner (SE II, NRHS Hurricane, Ness Big Sucker, S&S Teardrop, Kuryakyn Hypercharger, etc. - these may or may not use K&N filter media) that replaces the restrictive stock air cleaner. This, in conjunction with more free-flowing (louder) pipes and larger jets for your carb to allow the engine to run a little richer and breathe a WHOLE LOT better. Do those 3 things, and you've done what most accept as a "Stage 1".
However, you "generally" can add more open slip-ons (SE II's, Cycle Shacks, etc. - NOT drag pipes) without rejetting or changing the air cleaner to get the Harley sound.
