Default Catalitic Converters on 07's, and popping out bafflels

Quick Question.... or 2 or 3

Does my new XL50, 2007, Sportster have a catalitic converter in the muffler?
if so, does that create a problem as far as taking out the baffles????

regards,

jim d

Yup, you've got a CAT at least in the forward pipe - that's where they had it in the 2006 models. As far as the cause and effect of removing the baffles on those slip-ons, I have no idea, but I wouldn't do it. If you're looking for the Harley sound, get a set of Cycle Shack slip-ons from Jireh's. They were only $121.75 delivered to my door. IMO I'd save the stock slip-ons in stock condition, just in case you ever need them for some reason.

Yup, you're going to need the cats. I'd save them until we find out how much the stock pipes w/ cats are. For example, on my Mustang I put on a Cat-less H-pipe that I bought for $150. Just for kicks I looked up the cost of the stock H-pipe and it was over $1500.00 I was going to sell it, but decided I'd keep it in my basement in case I ever needed it for some reason (emissions test, EPA reg, ... who knows). Anyway I saved it because I wouldn't want to have to spend that kind of cash later and wouldn't recommend damaging your cats.

Plus, in 07 they have 02 sensors. There's a good possibility that with the cat removed, it's going to throw a code and cause the MIL to come on. That will might be able to be fixed with a new ignition module program, or even a different 02 sensor. But as far as I know now, the aftermarket hasn't caught up... should be soon though if they haven't already.

Here's the URL for Jireh's:

http://www.parts123.com/PartFrame.as...E=JIREH_CYCLES

And, if you like the look of SE II's, but not the price, here's something else to look at:

http://www.2orangeharleys.com/servlet/Detail?no=279

Good luck!

Uh... Sorry, but 07 XL's do NOT have a solid Catalytic Converter......

They are however coated with a Catalytic Epoxy in the resonance chamber....

Closed Loop systems such as the Delphi system don't need Solid Core Cat's until you go 103 Stage II.....

FWIW, should you choose to remove the baffle, there will be no backpressure for the o2's to get an accurate read on the gas' that are being sent downrange.....

You will begin to experience a lean pop and possible erratic motor behavior as a result....

You might want to invest in a PC or SERT prior to coring out or replacing the mufflers as well as installing a Low Restriction AC unit.....

I am sooooo glad I bought the 2005! The 2006's were coming out in another 2 weeks when I read an article that was talking about all the junk on '06's and newer Sporty's that was being put on to satisfy EPA regs, and I wanted NO part of that. WHEW - I finally made a second good decision!
