Unhappy Problem with slip on exhausts?

Hi all,

I have a 09 Nnightsters and its not running at the moment, the shop says is due to the new slip on exhausts, and said it needs a fuel-pak? the place I got the exhaust from said its had no problems running these exhausts on nightster with fuel injection without re-map or fuel pak! Any help? thx

Slip-ons are not going to keep a bike from running. I'm assuming your statement is literal, and that the bike won't run at all.

Slip-ons won't even cause a bike to run poorly, generally. There is something else going on here.

put the stock cans back on , take it to the shop n tell em to fix it if its still wrong , if it works fine , then you maywell need a fuel pack , but as a rule slipons with baffles will work fine ,

Changed my former sporty exhaust from slip-on's to full exhaust (V&H short shots) w/no problems. I think they're trying to sell you a tuner, or change $$$ for hefty repair. Should have no problems w/slip's...

Cool

Thanks for all your replies, I when to Harley and give them the stock baffles to refit!

Their saying that the slip ons were open too much and the bike was over heating, the thing is the slip-ons had baffles in they so not sure what the truth is?????

Got a mail back from the place I got the exhausts and they say they have had no problems with them and you dont need to re-map or fuel-pak!

Bloody fuel injected bikes :-( should got an older bike with the Carb, now that I understand!

Later

Which slip-ons did you try?

I can't imagine a pipe that will suddenly make the bike not run.
Let 'em put the stock ones back on. I bet you will still have the problem.

What's the whole story here? did you put the slip-ons on it and it started to overheat right away?, or did this happen over time?, it actully runs or is not running at all now?

Cool Baffle lesson:::

Ok here goes,,,
On a stock EFI sportster with Rush slip on's,,there is Decelleration pop
altho It's minimal with 1.75" baffles
1.5" baffles,,no de cell pop
2.0" baffs a bit more,,
and now your getting close to a leaner engine.
Decel pop Is due to less back pressure.
Sounds like you don't know what Baff's you have.

The Bike should run with any muffler,,true,,but how lean,,
All stock Is EPA compliant 14.7 AFR(Air fuel ratio)
I would not trust a Harley dealer remap since It is Illegal for them to modify AFR's richer to even 14.0.
I can't understand why the bike didn't run,,BUT you could burn up your engine.
You need a good dyno man, Maybe,,,,,,
I listened to a brand new 48 with Rush slip ons and 1.75 baffles,,
he had and was not worried with a tiny bit of de cel pop.
BUT he like me added the X14ieD which takes the bike to 14.0 AFR.
Only 100 bucks and simple.
His bike was dyno'ed to be shure
Check It out,,,

Untill then put the stockers back on..
FYI I cannot justify the 1,000 dollar cost of a stage one.
fuel pack or PC III or V plus exhaust plus free flow air filter.
For what It gives you which seems to be 7-9 more ft lbs of torque
and 8 or 9 hp considering Its often at RPM's you wont ride at.
Unless your Into braggin rights or the drag strip.
If yer gonna spend that much,,cams and head work will give you much more
Thats my Opinion and many will not agree.

HI All,

I try and put in the whole story for you'se!

The is a 1200 Nightsters and its was stock. But Harley Dublin were looking for outrageous price for Exhausts, Air filter and Bars! I knew what I wanted the bike to sound and look like even before I got it.

I sources all the parts from ebay, Screamin eagles Heavy breather clean, HD 28" drag bars, 6.5" risers, Slip-on mufflers with removable baffles. I asked Harley would it be OK to do the work myself as I have built and repaired older Harley's before. Was told fine, as long as didnt touch the wiring the warrenty would be fine. I put the new exhausts on, and the bars but couldnt put the risers on due to wiring not fitting so left that and the heavy breather plate had a crack so order a new, arriving soon. The bike ran great a little drop in power, but I didnt care not into speed!

Last Sunday drove in to town and on the way home the bike stopped firing on the rear cyclinder and started backfiring, Thought it was a fuel problem pulled in a station and fill up, but the bike would kick over and needed to have it pick up! Drop in to Harley Dublin and their saying its the Exhausts and the warrenty is invalid, oh the seals on the exhaust manafolds are gone so are the ones in the center!!!

I got on to the place I got the exhaust and they say its rubbish and they never had this problem with any customers. So I have brought Harley the stock exhaust to replace and see if that fix it!

I think thats the whole thing, What you think??

Thnx
Niall
