My baffles were out when I bought the bike. It was quite loud and sounded OK but not great. I think the tone improved a bit (got deeper) when I made some new straight through baffles for mine and packed it w/ muffler packing. It got a little bit quieter as well. It's still a mile and a 1/2 kind of exhaust though (can be heard from 1.5 miles away).

I had the newer style SE slip on's on the XL50 when I got it and I modded the baffles, sounded better then removed them and it was loud and sounded ok, but not what I wanted. I now have a real set of pipes wiht no baffels and I have the look and sound I want. IMO the SE slip on's SUCK! no matter what you do.
