The KTM RC8R superbike makes 170HP and the Ducati 1198 superbike also makes 170HP. MotoGP bikes make around 230HP and have a weight minimum of around 350lbs. Even the 125cc 2 stroke Moto bikes make a little over 100HP. Its all made by high compression (around 13 or 14:1) which makes a lot of torque and then by put those pistons on super light low end components that enable the engines to turn very very high RPMs. Since HP is torque times RPM they are able to make a lot of power out of "low" displacement.

The thing that hurts Harleys is the fact that the firing pattern is not symmetrical to get the "Harley" sound, the valve train is not efficient at all compared to metrics, and compression has to stay relatively low to allow them to stay air cooled and able to be cruisers.

...and that's why we love them so...

I like to race ricers to keep my bike in check...otherwise it starts to get a big head after a while and it starts to give me attitude...so I put it in it's place. Reminds it of who's boss, ya know. Losing by a mile to a ricer, calms her down a bit and brings me back to reality.

Regardless, i bought the nightster for its style and looks. I knew what it was capable and not capable of doing. I love my bike and I know its slow for the ricers, but fast enough for me.

Umm, put some money in your Sporty in the right places and then you'll even the score in the 1/4 mile all the way up to 1000cc ricers.

Your Sportsters slow cause you want it to be.

You could probably beat a stock Ninja 250 As a note, it is amazing what the engineers do with those bikes. My fiance's '09 CBR600 is crazy fast. I think its rated at like 104HP.

Most modern 600cc sport bikes run the 1/4 mile in under 11s... so basically you have no chance. The one nice thing about sportsters is they respond very very well to mods.
