Exhaust Nut Installation Problem

Exhaust Nut Installation Problem
Had the exhaust nuts that hold the flange on at the engine fall off on my rear exhaust pipe. First time I've had this happen since I put on my V&H short shots (after about 1,000 miles). From reading this forum, I understand it's a common problem.
Anyway, the heat shield is preventing me from installing one of the nuts. Having a tough time getting my fingers between the engine and heat shield to line the nut up with the bolt and get it started. I can't get a socket to line up with the nut because of the heat shield. I had a friend help me install these originally, so I can't remember exactly how we did it the first time.
How have you all dealt with this? Just keep playing with it, or do you use a different tool? I'm wondering if one of those weekend warrier socket sets with the flexible hose would at least get it most of the way in.
Thanks.

I had the same problem - I did`nt have a problem getting the nut started though with a socket and extension.
As per cHarley`s link the guy says not to use loc tite blue - I did use the blue and hav`nt had a problem since but I don`t know if it`s because I tightened it correctly or if the blue loc tite is helping.

Well, I managed to get them on. Initially started to try and take the heat shield off, but was not sure (until I saw the responses above) if that is possible with the pipe still on the bike. Putting the hose clamps back on with the exhaust still installed seemed like a daunting task (like fishing in the dark). In the end, my 11 year old's small hands were able to get the nut started. Thank God for small hands!
Thanks for the replies.

These will end them falling off for sure. I have them on mine, and have never lost another nut. I have bought a lot of things from these people, and they are real good to buy from. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EVOLU...Q5fAccessories

Double-nut the bugger & you'll be good. Those heat shields are tough to work around - just gotta get them off & have patience.
