i wouldnt even try dude. if your just wanting to race around town(putting peoples lives in danger...not to mention your own) buy a sport bike. sure there are guys that are running super fast sportsters but they are putting a ton of money in them and i'll bet they are strictly track bikes.

a bike like you are describing is totally impractical. sure you could put nitrous in it...but what happens when you get to a light and some guy wants to race...do you say "hang on a sec while I arm my nitrous system (unless you plan on keeping the system on all the time with a window switch)?"

PLUS...there is NO INEXPENSIVE WAY OF MAKING YOUR BIKE FASTER.

Preaching: Look up local laws against street racing first, where I live it is NOT worth it. They instantly impound your ride and arrest you. Take it to your local drag strip and don't put others lives in danger for a little ego boost. Done Preaching

I just had an 05' GSXR 1000 for two years. It was FAST and it handled great, It also stopped FAST. It would start to redline in first gear around 95mph, second gear would hit 120. It is supposed to be a 10 1/4 sec bike from the factory. I would imagine your going to spend a lot of cash on getting a sportster to achieve that?? I'm no expert though.. The thing with the sport bikes is they also have the BRAKES to stop you FAST, good luck getting brakes like that on a sportster.. You need a lot of space to stop at those speeds ESP with crappy brakes, single-small front rotor with a single piston caliper are not going to do it..

Psychedelic mushrooms. Because it's only going to happen in hallucinations.

Hmmm.

Let's see, I have this heavy, underpowered cruiser that I want to use to "leave everyone in my rear view mirror" including much lighter, more powerful sportbikes. And I want to do it cheaply.

How many things can we find wrong with this OP?

Most silly thing i ever saw was in the late 80s a bunch of Harley riders came to try and race on a 1/8th mile ET track. Most the metrics were accross the finish before the HD's hit 3rd. At least they had the b@lls to give it a run. If i wanted to street race it wouldn't be on a Harley. HD's can't hang with any metrics regretfully but they are not designed to either.

Tekdiver,

I got a good laugh out of your post man Can't say that the 6 second Sportster sightings are any more frequent than sasquatch sitings. The amount of dinero it would take to make a Sporty outrun a sportbike, much less run a 6 second quarter would be enough for me to buy another bike which is actually fast to begin with, and toss a few items on it to have it demolish a souped sporty

Best Regards,

Karl

Buy a used Triumph Rocket III. 140 CID / 2300 cc in line triple, 805 lbs with bags and windshield, 11.20s in mag tests vs. the Star (Yamaha) V-Max. A couple of the folks over at the Triumph forum have done some minor tweaks on these to push them into the high tens. I test rode an R3 back in March and was shocked at how fast it was AND how well it handled.

I think you could maybe do this if you get serious with it. It wont be cheap but with a 90" kit from NRHS and a set of their heads and a set of redshift cams it could be possible. Its all going to come down to gearing. Sportbikes are geared to run way over 120 but you can gear yours even lower than it is with a chain conversion from Zippers and the right sprocket selection. Maybe it is possible. I have to agree with someone else who posted here by saying i would definately invest in a dual disk front end of an R model. maybe some good shocks on the back and a set of rearsets. Im sure you could get into the 600-750 realm but 1000s and 'busas. i dont know.

I would go with the sprocket change. But, do the opposite of what was posted above. You'll want to go bigger on the rear and smaller on the front to lower your top speed and give you more acceleration.
