Default Do we really need the heat-shields?

Has anyone remove the heatshields from the header pipes? I have a new 48 and was wondering how it would look. I never ride without boots and long pants.

If you take the shields off and don't at least wrap the pipes, you'll learn very quickly why the shields exist! There's a reason that headpipes turn blue or gold, but the heat shields don't.

If you're going to do it, you should at least use black wrap on them.

I have drag pipes on my bike and don't have heat shields installed. I like the bluing of the pipes so that doesn't bother me. Just watch your pants on the pipes. I have a couple that have burn marks from the pipes.

I say go for it if you want to, you can always put them back on. No different than people who ride in shorts, you just need to be more careful and for sure wear pants without the shields.

You can go without the shields but IMO no matter how careful you are it will eventully leave a mark.

Running without heat shields or heat wrap is (IMHO) for trailer queens. If you really ride your scoot, you'll want something there, or you'll burn the **** out of yourself eventually, and burn your pants fairly often.

THEY'RE HOT! So look out. Touching the heat shields will cause a burn, but touching the bare headers will straight dominate your skin.

Man those heat shields keep things from catching on fire, my Triumph had single walls and I could light my cigars off the headers.
