I just got a 2012 Harley pamphlet through the post today. Printed on it, amongst other things, is "always wear an approved helmet". Says enough; not that we should do as we are told, but be wise!

I really don't care what anyone thinks of my modular helmet. I still want to be able to argue my point after any crash without drooling.

Just last week I saw this in the "Proficient Motorcycling" book:

Real Harley owners dont wear full face helmets?-hdtb0.png

Made my wonder if it hadn't been wiser to buy a FF instead of the 3/4 like I did...

Been riding 35+ years. Normally wear a half or 3/4 but took a 200 mile freeway ride today including 2 rainstorms. Wore the FF and may start wearing it all the time. Worked great with or without the rain. Not hot even in the Florida 90 degree heat. Didn't feel like any different of a Harley rider than I do without it.

Default I wear a full face

I wear my old dirtbike helmet I got when I was 15. I removed the MX visor. My head's still about the same size, it's DOT certified, vintagey looking, helps remind me of my childhood, and it's no where near as bobble-headed as normal road helmets. Plus I get the added bonus of reducing face smashing should anything bad ever happen compared to wearing a shitty novelty or Biltwell Hustler type helmet. I don't know if it's "cool" or whatever but I don't really care. I think it's pretty sweet.

Ive done a few mods, including drag bars, new seat, pegs etc. The bike looks wicked and people can't believe its a harley and I get tons of compliments.

I wear an Icon SSR full face helmet thats flat black to match the bike. Someone told me today "real harley owners dont wear full face helmets". Im new to the whole culture but I understand it. Ive seen guys wearing vanity helmets that are not DOT approved and they do look cool but I dont want to risk my safety. I already feel weird enough driving without my leather jacket, but its been a constant 90 degrees and humid and I just cant do it.

So my question is, do I look douchey riding around with a full face helmet and gloves and nothing else? Am I the butt of all jokes when other motorcycle guys drive by?
Tell whoever said that to **** off

If it makes you feel safer wear it

I think someone that is nervous and doesn't feel safe is just as dangerous as someone that doesn't know wth they are doing
So wear whatever makes you feel better and **** everyone else
