RE: Highway pegs
My sporty always had forward controls - I put mid mount pegs on it to change position during long rides. BUT my primary bike is my '05 low rider (mid mount controls but came with highway pegs). I debated for quite a while (1 year, 15,000 miles) about putting forwards on it. What I did was to use the highway pegs exclusively and heel shift and brake. I used the mid mounts for position changes during long rides.
I did put forwards on my LR, and installed matching mid pegs.
So, to answer your question.
1) Yes it can be done.
2) Yes you should do it.
3) Learn to heel shift and brake and you may find youself putting on forwards and keeping the mids as well.

RE: Highway pegs
Do what is comfortable to you. I have a xl1200c so it came with forward controls. I like the riding position better and in long rides will lay may ankles over the forward control pegs and really stretch out. I am 5' 10" and 185 lbs if that helps any. However I do know other riders that do not like the feel or can't get used to forward and like the midmounts better. If you know anybody else with different setups it may be worth a ride to see what is comfortable to you.

RE: Highway pegs
Mechanic,
Do you have a part number and price on those pegs?? Where do they get mounted, I see a plate where I think they should go that looks pre drilled. It's an 06 1200L that I am looking to put them on. I am sure it will help on long rides.
Thanks,
Pauline

RE: Highway pegs
Thanks, they look great..my list is getting longer!!!
I like your pegs to with the flames...how's that 1200L working out for you? Got mine in June had a few issues with oil leaks but seems to be great now, put 3200 miles on, but nothing this week with Ernesto lurking around the east coast, should be outta here by Sunday and I have a week off...I'm going ride till I'm stupid..NJ State Hog Rally. I don't do much group riding but it's always great to see so many bikes at once.
Maybe I can treat myself to hiway pegs at the dealer near the rally, are they in the 07 parts book?
Thanks Pauline

RE: Highway pegs
I only have an 06 catalog...but the part # is: 49053-04 for the peg mounts and then the pegs are sold separately. I know there is an aftermarket company whose frame mounts are cheaper...but you only have 1 peg style to choose from. I can't recall the name though.
I haven't had any problems with mine...though 2 months of uncharacteristic heavy rain ("the 1000 year floods", as predicted last year by a Native American lady that I know of), has really put a dent in my riding and I only have 2200 on mine. It certainly reinforces to me that I made the right decision when I sold everything and left Pittsburgh, Pa. to move to the southwest! I can't believe I lived 40+ yrs. with all that rain and stuff! Rain and snow are 4 letter words! And now the reminants of Hurricane John is heading this way! ARGH! [:@]
ANYWAY...I like the frame mounted highway pegs. They keep the slim look for the bike.
