Default loud ticking/knocking at 3/4+ throttle...

2008 xl1200n cycle shacks and k&n panel...PC3 tuned inhouse by dynojet...when I roll on the throttle beyond 3/4 I hear a loud knocking or ticking in the engine. Any ideas what could be causing this? I had thought that it was running lean from the AC/slip ons but now it has been fully dynotuned and shouldn't have any lean spots.

prob no thoughts cause its hard to diagnose sounds over the internet!

that said, my "off the wall" thoughts would be:
1. assume that you are running good quality premium fuel?
2. sportys do knock- could be completely normal... which is why its hard to diagnose over the web!

btw, with a fuel controller you prob want to run more rich than lean. this shouldnt cause knocking though- i wouldnt think

Sportster engines have very noisy top ends. Is the sound coming from the rocker box or the cylinder? Does the engine sputter or miss fire?

no tach If I were to guess 3500-5k (varies depending on how hard I am in the throttle)

I am riding pretty hard when I hear it so I am not sure where the noise is originating from exactly...possibly rockerbox (it sounds loud enough to be closer to me) no sputter no misfire.

Just a thought - I installed my slip-on`s and did`nt tighten everything enough or use loc-tite - after a few miles it started to kinda knock - turns out I lost an exhaust nut at the head and it caused this kinda knock - when I purchased and installed the new one the knock went away. - Double check your exhaust nuts just to be sure.

If it was a carb bike I would say you have too small of a high jet. You say it's been Dyno Tuned. It sounds to me like that Dyno tune wasn't accurate.

My 2012xlc has "loud zones"... ticking loudly (think sewing machine on steroids). Mine is loudest in 3d gear @ 42-47 mph. even at steady cruise (not lugging). Quiets right down at 50 mph. Think this is common experience without a problem

I rode a sporty for a few years and it knocks all the time. It was diagnosed as you are hearing the rocker box. That's a lot of motor covered by a small tank and the heads starring you right in the face.
