I need new tires. The shop I go to has the tires for $300, but said it'll be 1.5 to 2 hours labor if I can't just bring them the wheels. I can't bring them the wheels. I don't have a garage, jack, knowledge, or tools necessary. I was looking on line and I could have gotten tires for $250, and there's a guy in my area who does wheel service for $18 per wheel or under $40 per wheel if you bring the bike in, but he only does wheel service for Harleys. Don't know what to do, but I'm not spending close to $500 for something I could get done for closer to $300. What do you guys do, and how much does it cost you? Labor cost in SF might be a lot higher than other areas, I think it's around $100/hour.
If you don't have the know how to pull your own wheels best to let a pro do it and pay the premium, proper wheels, alignment and balance are all that keeps you up on two wheels at a high rate of speed, nothing to be taken lightly ..
You can buy the tires that came on your bike for about $120 online or local indy. The indy should only charge about $30 per tire to mount. bottom line you should only have $150 in each tire for everything
I order my tires online. Take the wheel off and a guy mounts and balances them for me. He charges $15 per wheel.
I do the same thing. The only difference is, our local indy charges $30 to m&b each tire you don't buy from him.
Most HD dealers will not m&b tires you buy somewhere else.
I looked into this pretty good on my last new rear tire, but I didn't want anyone else removing/installing the wheel on the bike... it was going to be about $280-$300 to buy it and have the HD dealer m&b it. Then it was going to be about $220 at the indy. I bought the same tire online (free shipping), took the wheel off myself, and had the indy m&b it for a total of $160.
But if you don't have the resources to do it yourself, at least locate a reputable indy and you should be able to save some coin.
after taking a beating on the first set of tires, i bought everything needed to do it myself. two tires later the tools have paid for themselves. and my buddies are planning to throw me a few dollars to do their bikes. so the tools end up costing me negative-dollars.
AS for tires, check out my thread "tires" replied to by cHarley and SportyPig today -those two gents have probably forgotten more about sporties than the rest of us know.
As to M&B see their replies to you today. - Snarv.
