In Virginia it's legal to have two helmet speakers but it's illegal to have two earbuds.
Go figure.
I use a 3/4 helmet with speakers and a Boostaroo brand amp when I want tunes. Works fairly well.

Is it illegal for the deaf to ride bikes there too?

Around here it seems like it's legal to drive a car when you're blind - so I'm guessing it'd be legal to ride if you were deaf.

The AMA is starting to suggest that people use earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones with their iPod/MP3 players inside their helmets when riding. This is to eliminate the wind noise so that you can hear transient sounds better. It also eliminates fatigue due to the constant drone, keeping you more alert longer. Yes, I use an iPod on all but the shortest rides.

Default Tunes & ear buds

I use to go the Skull Candy ear bud route and they worked fine, but I grew tired of the buds in My ears . I don't seem to have the same buffeting around My ears so I wanted to find something easier for Me and My MP3 player. Found these on some forum and for around $80 they work fine mounted to the windshield with the 80wt. amp in the front tool bag. I think they call them shark amp systems. Can all unclip in about two minutes....WVleo

To each his own, I rode with my blackberry punding out some this weekend for the first time. It was cool, although the people I rode by probably thought it was odd that I was singing and bobbing my head. Makes my ride that much more enjoyable. I don't let it drown out the pipes, just enough to enjoy and not be distracted.
