That problem should be easy to identify. It's either the stator or the voltage regulator. And if you run it too long it will be both the stator and the voltage regulator.

what year is your bike? this may not be related, but I would check the system relay. it may be corroded. When my bike went haywire, the bat. and engine lights came on, it would not keep running, the headlight dimmed, pretty much everything went nutz.

the bike is a 2009 nightster that i bought exactly 2 months ago.

i dont have a service manual yet but in my owners manual it shows
a system relay in the fuse box, is this the relay you are talking about?
if so any idea how much they cost. if its cheap enough i will just go
buy one and pop it in to see what happens.

thanks

relay should be under $12. and find another dealership or look up your states lemon laws and let them know they can have the bike back.

My 04 FXDLi would do very similar then just stop and die on me. I would start it back up,it might run for a mile and die or run for a hundred and then die.Turned out to be a bad battery belive it or not.

I know it's frustrating when a dealership rep gives you the "blow-off" so I'd stick w/the warranty fix & make an appt to speak w/their service manager, or owner. Need to elevate this issue so they have proper attention...good luck!

supposedly they tested the battery last week when it was in and tested all systems
and everything spec'd out.

would an auto parts store carry the relay i need or is it a dealer only item?

if dealer only item i will ride the bike to another dealer over in PA ( if it makes it)
to pick up a relay and while there talk to service dept there and get their opinion
on it.
as i said the damn thing is intermittent, unfortunately i don't have a place to carry
my ohmmeter otherwise when it comes on i could pull over and test it at the battery tender plug, i would think it would show me there if it is discharging or not.

Just a thought, have you checked the battery cables? Need both ends to be tight. It could very well be a regulator and or stator, but I always check the easy things first.

I feel your pain. This is my bitch with HD. It is hard to get them to look at anything that is not completely broken. You can tell them something is wrong but they haul off with that familiar line "They all do that" or take it for a ride and come up with some BS excuse and hand the keys back with the bike doing the same thing.
