Default 1st Service

I just hit 500 miles on my 06 sporty and I was wondering if I should go in for a service now or wait for the 100 miles marker and the service and add the syn. oil?

thanks

I have about 900 miles on mine right now, haven't changed the oil yet but plan on having synthetic put in when I take it in for the 1000 mile service. Harley recommends that the first service be at 1000 miles so that they can make sure that everything is breaking in okay, however I'd call your local dealership and double check with them to be certain, and a pre-check up probably wouldn't be a bad idea and certainly wouldn't hurt anything.. except your wallet.

Having it checked out wouldn't hurt, but I am pretty particular about following the manufacturer's recommendations when it comes to service, especially as it relates to warranty work.

Going in at 1000 will be fine. Especially to save yourself the cash.

Since Harley has started producing their own "brand of synthetic oil" (which I've been told is produced by Sunoco), they have changed their long standing position of not using synthetic oil in their V-Twin engines.

Apparently they are now stating that Syn3 can be used as a 'first fill' oil in new bikes. Their position on that is;

Yes, this product can be used as a first fill upon delivery of a new motorcycle. The formula is approved by Harley-Davidson for use in all stages of engine life and is not detrimental to the engine break-in cycle.

Their reply when asked about their sudden recommendation change concerning the use of synthetic oil in the V-Twin engines (now that they have their own brand of synthetic) was;

The Motor Company has never supported the use of synthetic products in our vehicles because there has never been any test validations completed on the numerous formulations in Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles. This product has been exclusively designed for Harley-Davidson and is the only synthetic product tested and certified by Harley-Davidson engineering for use in Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles.

LoL... Go figure.

Wait until 1k. Until then, try to go easy on it.

When you do go in for the 1k, definitely ask for synthetic oil and a list of what all they did to the bike.

I was glad I took mine in (back around 900 miles).

Just took mine in today for the 1K service. Switched to synthetic. Total cost was $234 so I guess that's not too bad. From now on I will do it myself unless I am having problems.Their total for the parts was $55. 2 O rings, 2 gaskets, 1 filter and 4 quarts of synthetic. Warranty-Had them adjust the carb to get rid of the farts, they tightened the foot pegs and raised the shocks a notch because I was bottoming on dips. Plus whatever else they do...
