Default 1989 sportster what to look out for

I think i may be adding a new bike to the stable this Saturday. I am looking at a 1989 sporty, it has been hard tailed and has a girder front end. It is a project bike so it doesn't run right now. What are some things I can look for or ask about when I go to see it. I am bringing a buddy that is a harley mechanic but also I always trust things that are said here. Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks

Your probably not going to get many comments due to the bike being an '89 and it's been chopped & it's not running. We can't really tell you what to look for. You just have to know what you want & what you want to put into a project.

Long as you get it at a good price all is well. It wasn't a bad year at all for the bike.

Default 1989 sportster

Good bike, but has a little problem from 1985 to 1990 with the clutch basket.
The stator is behind the basket and it will tend to wobble and with little room between the magnets (basket is the rotor) and stator they tend to collide and eat the stator or knock the magnets off. you will have to replace the clutch basket ($375-$600). There are other parts to replace while it is apart. Other than that it is a good bike. Mine is still in parts (money tight) right now.
