If you have a vacuum line to your petcock a leak could be partially shutting down the fuel flow to the carb, you can check for vacuum leaks with WD40.
Other than that maybe a sticking float in the carb not letting fuel in, or maybe even a small piece of paper or plastic in the gas tank that occasionally plugs the outlet to the carb?
