I don't really know if it matters, but I think the bike is designed to be emptied of oil while on the jiff. If straight up would you maybe not get as much of it out?
I didn't notice that this was a Sportster thread, my mistake. On a big twin removing the filter with the bike straight up minimizes the oil spill. Yes, drain the crank case with bike on jiffy.

Not only will the 30 micron be better for your EVO than the 10 micron K&N, the large (63813-90T) HD filter in chrome is a lot cheaper, ~$9.00 from the local dealer.
In addition to it's extra capacity, the longer filter is a bit easier and cleaner to replace than the shorter filter. I punch 2 holes in the end of the filter at 6 & 12 o'clock and let it drain into a pan. Because it sticks out further, you don't get as much oil mess dripping on the bike frame if you just use a small piece of foil to direct the flow.
I know the nut on the end of the K&N makes for easy removal, but for what you save in the price of 1 filter, you can buy an oil filter cup socket at your local auto parts store.
cHarley - thanks for the part number info on the longer filter. I'll give it to my local HD dealer that said there wasn't one for a Sportster! I'll make sure to get one for the next engine service.

The parts guy/gal at the dealer may try and tell you that this filter isn't for a Sporty, so I wouldn't bother tell them what bike it's for. Just give them the part number and tell them how many you want.
BTW, this filter was designed for the BT EVO's, but it's identical to the Sporty filter, except for it's length.

Do they make this longer filter in black and if so might you know the part number...? I'm not likely to use a chrome filter if I can help it.
