Default Race Tuner or Re-Map

The dealership called me today to ask me if I wanted a re-map or a race tuner. They are installing V&H short shots and a Roland Sands A/C on my sportster 48 (1200).

What is recommended a race tuner and if so what brand? They are saying HD version or should i stick with a re-map?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

remap is alot cheaper. I have been using one since i got my bike with no problems. i think a tuner cost 400 or 500 more.

I am running a Power Commander V (premapped by fuel moto) with V&H sideshots & RSD speed 7 A/C. Power Commander was less costly that Dyno tune.

I think the going rate for the remap is around $185. The last I checked getting the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner installed and set up on the dyno is around $1000 after they add in all the labor. The downside to saving money and going with the remap is that the bike will still be running factory lean. With the super tuner they will put you on what I call the rich side of lean, which will give the bike more performance and make it run cooler.

The HD remap is a "One Size Fits All" deal, designed specifically to work with the SE A/C and SE muffler combination. If you're running a freer flowing A/C and/or exhaust, you'll still be running lean and have less than optimum performance, but I'd say the remap is better than nothing.

I got the super tuner and been learning and running runs using the smart tune feature. With the super tuner, you can load the same maps they charge $150 for and tweak them.

My bike has the remap and it would not work with the pipes I have so I got a PC III and had it dyno tuned. The SERT is nice, but cost more then the PC III or V and is a one bike only app. What I mean is once that unit is used on your bike it can only be used on your bike-not another one like you can do with a PC so you can never sell the SERT if you want or need to.

race tuners are for more modified engins(cams, headwork ect.) you would be wasting your money go with the download all that too lean crap is bullsh** your bike is eqipped with o2's and a computer it will make the decision for you

Like cHarley mentioned above, the 'Re-Map' is just a canned program that is better than nothing, but it will never match a Race Tune and Dyno Tune by someone that knows what they are doing.

My EFI 2003 100th Anniversity FatBoy has the normal stuff; Screamin' Eagle high flow intake, the good 'for offroad use' Screamin' Eagle 2 mufflers, etc..

It had the canned 'Re-Map' and ran very well, but after installing a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner and having a good Dyno Tune is picked up an additional 8 horsepower to the rear wheel.

I would imagine you would get the same results on your Sportster when comparing a Re-Map against a Race Tuner.

You can fine tune a Race Tuner to it's specific application, while a canned Re-Map is just that, a one size fits all canned Re-Map.

Sorry but I do not agree with you. This is just not true one bit. Even a completely stock bike (exhaust and everything) can highly benefit from being re-tuned with a tuning program. The bikes run very close to being too lean to make the EPA people happy since they do not have cats. This slaughters what little power Harley single pin crank motors are able to make.
