I'm gonna wrap my pipes tonight. I took the heat shields off and I think I'm going to wrap over the mounting bracket. My only question is after I wrap over it I am gonna have to make holes for the bolts to go through. Is this gonna compromise the wrap? I'm worried it'll cause it to Frey or unravel.

Yes it will compromise the wrap. It will start to frey where you poke the hole.

I bought a pair of shortshots with heat wrap, but i don't like the look.

I'd love to go back to heat shields, but the black heat shields i have don't match my bike. Any of you in this thread willing to trade your chrome heat shields for my brand new black ones?

I am looking for TRADE chrome heat shields for Sportster XL 2004+.

Had mine on for a year, no issues. Also wrapped them while on the bike. Took about 30 minutes, maybe a bit more (no clock in the wash bay downtown..)

I removed the heat shields & wrapped my wife's...along with some other things. Here's a before & after.

I don't like VHT coating because it turns ashy after a while. I use DEI pipe wrap coating on the pipes. Never a problem.

I've also NEVER had a problem with wrapping pipes. My Ironhead had wrapped pipes for 10 years or more and that bike was run HARD. I removed the wrap and the pipes looked exactly like chrome pipes that have had heat shields on them. The only issue I can see happening is if your fuel is jacked. Running lean is running hot and that will rust brand new chrome pipes so I assume it would kill wrapped pipes as well.
