Had a 1996 fat boy that chirped when I let off the throttle. It"s the drive belt, needs to be adjusted.

Mine made some chirpy sounds for a while, it was from the rear disc brake, a little brake grease on the back of the pads solved the problem.

We had some fairly chitty weather here this weekend so I took advantage of it and cleaned the belt and tightened it a bit. I used a small brush I picked up at the local True Value hardware store along with some soap and water.

I put the bike up on the lift and removed the lower belt guard, rear muffler and the sprocket cover. You won't have to remove all these parts to clean the belt, but I wanted to check out the drive sprocket and belt tension.

So I used the brush and soap to clean the inside of the belt. I wiped the soap off with a paper towel as I went along.

I had called the local stealer about a belt tension tool, but they aren't in stock. So I decided to just adjust up a little bit of the slack and I used a caliper to measure the adjustment bolts at the rear of the swingarm to make sure they were even.

I then moved on to removing and polishing the rear brake pedal and I polished the upper triple tree in preparation for my speedo relocation/bar changeout.

Once I finished I took the bike for a ride and the chirping noise was completely gone. I'm still going to pick up a tension guage, but I'm happy with the results so far. Just want to make sure it's not too tight.

Mine was really bad, thought the tranny was going but after a washing with degreaser and water the noise & chatter disappeared. take your time, wash between the teeth, oil makes this happen.

I've ridden a lot in all sorts of rain and never noticed any belt noise. As with the primary chain turn the bike over and check tension in a few places and adjust at the tightest spot (if there is one). The belt tension tool is a great help and the only dedicated Harley tool I have bought.

this is an issue with the belt -- stretched or needs adjusting as said -

my buddy has air ride on his fatboy - when he lowers it alll the way down and rides
her gets this same crazy squeak squeal
because the belt has more slack when lowered - when he puts it to ride height it goes away

u can hear it at the very beggining of this video it whiiiiines like crazy lol

i told him to not ride it lowerd hahaha that solved that issue
