Windshield suggestions?
Hey All!!
I'm taking a long road trip in a couple of weeks (350 miles each way). I think that I am going to get a shield for my 06 custom. I don't have a clue what would be the best type. I do know that I want a detachable since I really don't like the looks of them and don't do a lot of highway driving. I am open to all suggestions. I am 5'11 and like to wear a half helmet. My main concern is the wind buffeting if I get to short of a shield. Thanks in advance for all your help and input.

Get the detachable windshield for sure. I have an '04 1200 Custom with no windshield and I wear a half helmet. My trips are equal to but generally longer than 350 miles and there have been times when I would have liked a windshield. Like when it rains. The one at the dealership, Dukes H-D, was about $400.00 Canadian so I didn't get it but wished I had now. My rides have been from Chatham to Brockville on the 401 hwy, have lunch & return back to Chatham in one day so that H-D windshield would be nice. It wasn't a big ugly thing. It suited the look of the bike.

I hesitated for awhile in the idea of getting a windshield. Now that I have one, I don't know how I could have ever gotten along without one. It is, without a doubt, the best add on I have done to the bike. At 50 or 60 you begin to have to hang on and, the ride is not as enjoyable. With the windshield, you won't have all that. Not to mention all the bugs that are hitting you at any speed. I got the standard model sold by the dealer. It has the traditional look made for the size of the bike. It was a little hassle to assemble and install it but once its done, its done. Very easy to remove. As I said, its the standard model. I don't know how much faster the quick release variation could be over this one. It only takes seconds to remove and go back to roughing it. I like it so much, I treat it very carefully with frequent cleaning and polishing. I'm short so I did have to trim the height down and inch or so to be able to look over it while riding. Easy enough with some masking tape and a hand held saber saw and sandpaper. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed if you decide to go and get one. Happy trails.

Thank you for the response, I will go to the stealer and start my search there. What is the "standard height" and will that be appropriate for my height? I have also been told that you don't want to look through the windshield but over the top of it. Is that in fact the case?
Again thanks for the help.

cbjch.......How tall are you? I'm 5ft, 5in. You should not have to be looking through the windshield. Bugs, rain, fog, dirt will all cause you to have an obstructed view. At a comfortable sitting stance, you should have the ability to see clearly over the windshield. I estimate my line of view begins about 2 inchs above the top of the shield if not more. I took mine down from its original height about an inch and a half. You really don't change the wind shielding any because the aerodynamics are still there to deflect things like wind, bugs. objects, etc. Look in the Harley catalog for what you want. It has it all outlined in the sportster section along with lots of other goodies to drool at. If you purchase one, ride with it stock for a couple of days, then you will have a feel for what you need to modify, if at all.

I like the Harley windshield, but it's a bit pricey for me. So, I went with the Memphis Shades Hellcat. It's not too big and looks pretty good on the Sporty.
Like some other riders here, I wasn't sure about the windshield concept either, but now that it's on, I love it.

RE: Windshield suggestions?
I put a HD detachable windshield on my 06 1200C. I'm about 5'5" and sitting up straight I am just about eyelevel with the top of the shield. I tend to ride a little slouchy so I'm usually looking through it. I doesn't bother me at all as long as I keep it clean although I admit that I haven't ridden through any bug storms yet. One word of caution. The instructions for the detachable windshield tells you to cover your front fender with a soft towel when first putting it on. Do it! The brackets are loose when you first put it on to get the alignment with your forks set up. Don't you know one of the brackets fell off right onto my 1 week old fender. Luckily I am a fanatic about following directions and had a soft, fluffy towel there to cushion the impact. Not a mark but damn near gave me a heart attack!
