About the only check you can do is make sure the tension is right and check the pulleys/teeth for signs that something has got caught between them. The cords that supply the strenght are internal so most times you can't really see when theya re going to let go, you just have to check for signs of stress....

My wife's 883 got a stone caught in between the belt and the sprocket at some point, and busted through. Didn't break the belt entirely, but I didn't trust having her ride it. Cost $350 to get it replaced at the dealer.

wow..that sucks. not a bad job for DIY if you have some basic tools and a lift. Just have to take off the front sprocket cover and drop the rear tire. I would buy the belt from JP or somewhere else besides the stealer and change it my self. You can be back on the road before you know it.

i would love to take it on myself, but i dont have a lift yet. going to see if my buddy that is getting me the belt can help me out with it or let me use a lift and such. going to call him now and see when to head over there.

If the bike that lost the belt was the pictured vehicle in your post, no front pulley cover or belt guard. That can alllow rocks etc to cause your problem.

Not knowing what year your bike is but buell has a belt by goodyear that was almost bulletproof and fits 1991-2003 sportster models . It was for a 2000-2001 buell If I remember correctly.
I posted a thread at www.xlforum.net but the site search feature is not working.

+1....it's a super simple job. the lift you can get for 80-100$ and have it for future use as well.
