Default trans fluid change.

tarans fluid change. Im have about 1500 miles on my bike and im going to change the trans fluid. Now i am against going to the dealer and buying there oil. So what kind of oil can i get at say auto zone that would work? And also what weight? Not going to go syn. I will probably put syn in on my next oil change in the motor and tranny. Thanks.

I use Mobile 1 75w-90 synthetic gear grease. My feeling is engine oil belongs in the engine. Gear grease belongs in a transmission. I even use the same in my primary.

Same here, Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil in the tranny/primary on the 1200C.

Down here where I currently live (SE Kansas/NE Oklahoma/SW Missouri borders) we ride year around, and during the summer months 105+ temperatures are pretty normal. In fact, for the past month the air temperatures have averaged 100+.

I don't feel that "engine oil" belongs in the transmission (or tranny/primary) in the Sportster, and apparently many others feel the same.

I've used Mobil1 75W-90 for around 5,000 miles since I got my 1200C, couple I know with Sportsters have used it for 20,000+ miles, and one guy has over 54,000+ on his Sportster using the same fluid. Some HD mechanics I know also run it in their 'personal bikes', even though they are not allowed to recommend it to customers at the dealership.

Some will say the Mobil 1 75W-90 will do horrible things to the clutch plates in Sportsters, but apparently that doesn't come from actual experience with the product.
