Default Backfiring through exhaust.

Am I running too rich when I backfire out the exhaust after de-exceleration.. I have a 2005 883 low with a 1200 2005 sporty carb on it with 180 main jet and a 42 idle jet at this time. Any help would be great.. Thanks in advance Bob in Pa.

Typically that would be excess fuel dumping out the exhaust valve and combusting in the pipe. If this is what is happening you should be able to see flames coming out of the pipes. People say that if you are getting "popping" on deceleration you are running too lean.

If I crank on the throttle while I am sitting still that is exactly what it does shoots flames out the pipes. Too lean you say ? Should I turn the mixture screw out a little more. Its out 3 turns now...

Sorry my post was confusing. If it is shooting flames it is too rich. If it is pooping on decel they say it is too lean

You may need to change your jets depending on what air cleaner and exhaust you are running. The mixture screw is for idle and should be about 2 turns out.

Do the same thing at night time and note the color of the flame. Yellow flame means you're rich, blue flame means you're lean.

Well after an exciting tour through the carb for about 5 times I finally found a piece of dirt in the slow jet.. Getting old is Hell.. Put the carb back on and and away I went. Another satified customer. Thanks for all you help.. I am so glad there are people out there that will take the time to help a fellow rider out. Its been my pleasure talking to you. And thanks again.. Till the next stupid problem... Bob in Pa.
