I just had this same prob when starting mine for the first time after winter. The float in the bottom of the carb was gummed up a bit because I forgot to drain the bowl. Here's what I did and it ran better than it ever has. I put some gumout carb cleaner in the tank, shook the bike back and forth to mix it up, started it up and let it run a bit to get into the carb, shut it off and let it set a couple days. I shut the fuel petcock off and removed the air filter next time I started it. It started ran for about a minute while I sprayed some gumout carb cleaner into the carb. I then turned the gas back on and fired it up and prob was solved. I think just running the float bowl dry let the float fall down but the carb spray made it run much better. Hope this woks for you, it only cost me about $12 for the fuel treatment and the carb spray.

If you are sure it was gas, I would suggest Seafoam treatment in the gas. That stuff will fix all manner of carb issues. If it is oil, and not gas, that's the oil blow by problem. Very common.
