Buy a service manual and do it yourself. It's not a difficult job.

I did both of mine myself while it was torn down for painting. Read the manual, took my time, no issues whatseover. Mine is a 99 883, but the basics SHOULD be the same. If it is out of warranty, just fix it and get over it. It is not that difficult, at least not to me, and it was my first time into a HD engine whatsoever.

I own a 2007 XL1200R. Bought it in excellent condition 2 months ago with 1500 miles on it. Less than 700 miles later both rocker arm covers were leaking. BS!!! My friend says its part of the HD experience. BS again!! This isnt my first air-cooled motor. It is my first American-made one though. Never have I had so many issues with a "new" bike. I had an 82 KZ750 that leaked less but on a bike that old I wasnt too concerned or suprised. One would think that after all these years of making bikes, HD would have gotten it right....perfect even. C'mon now, cruisers dont require near the R&D that sportbikes need. Yet sportbikes (or any that I've owned) never have leaked. My other bike is a 2002 GSXR-750 with numerous mods and that thing is as tight as a nut and bolt. I too believe that since this is common among these bikes that it is a quality issue. I live in Germany and when I went to the dealer I had to pay b/c mine isnt under warranty. Parts/labor was around 155 euro. Expensive yes and I dont have the tools to do it myself. The moment I start to question a bikes reliability is the moment we need to part ways. I'm a sportbike die-hard with an open mind and crap like this isnt helping me "cross-over". C'mon HD get it right b/c I want to support American Iron.

I asked a mechanic at my dealer about it. He said it was due to friction between the cover and the rocker box. He said that the gasket in there is metal on the newer bikes and you get some weeping because the metal is rubbing slightly together when you have expansion/contraction. He told me it was nothing to worry about and that a lot of bikes do this. He said it's more noticeable on bikes with the silver painted covers like my iron. He showed me a chrome cover on a big twin and showed me the same weeping coming from it, but it was not as noticeable.
