04 1200 engine won't stop and smoke.
I think I have a problem. I was out on my Sporty yesterday and after about 8-10 traffic miles, I pulled into a resturant and hit the stop switch. My bike continued to try to run for about 3 seconds, then finally quit with a big puff of smoke from in front of my right knee. (O.k, so I don't know then names of the parts on my bike, but I'm not affraid to learn). Anyway, from reading the boards, I also think that my bike idles too fast. On this particular day, it was idling fast and blowing smoke from the exhaust. At times I smell gas as well.
On my second long ride weekend I believe I experienced what you call "carb cough". It didn't idle nearly as fast. As a matter of fact, I had to really work with it to warm up. But it did have that great Harley 'rythmn and sound' that I have been looking for.
So what do y'all think?

By any chance, are you riding with the "enrichener" out all the time (i.e., do you close it all the way when warm and does it stay ALL THE WAY closed?). Sounds to me like you're running very rich and blowing back through the intake (behind the ham can on the RIGHT side)...

I always push the enricher **** all the way in by the time I turn out of our subdivision. Many times, I have it in well before I leave the drive as it is running so fast. I put 89 octane in last time but will definately bump it up and see if that helps. I don't see the enricher inching back out, but I will watch it closely. Thank you.

I would agree with the Octane issue... I think it should be 91 or better... sounds like pre-detonation or run-on to me.
Have you messed with the throttle (drag/lock) screw under the switch cover on the handlebar? (for high idle) or adjusted the throttle cables?(they could be too tight)
I don't know how many miles you have on the bike, but have you checked the condition of your plugs...

I checked the **** at the throttle and found that it was a bit tightened. Opened it up all the way and it did the trick!!! How sweet it is. Now I am ready for new pipes. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I did put 89 octane in the tank on the last fill up so I bet is a combination of both. If I have any more trouble, I am going to bump it up to 91 octane.
(Now if I could only figure out how to ride to work in dress slacks and heels!)
