What you will need exactly is ... MONEY!
If you have not already done a stage 1, (Exhaust, A/C and re-tune) how do you even know that you will want to go to a bigger piston in the motor? The increase in horse power after a stage 1 might be enough of an improvement for you to be content with that upgrade alone for a while. Do you ride a lot of highway miles? If so, you might want to think about changing your drive ratio from the stock XL883 set up to a stock XL1200 set up to help lower the engine RPMs at highway speeds. The bike will be more comfortable at highway speeds and you will get an increase in gas mileage too! There really is a reason that most people build their motors in stages. Sage 1, stage 2, stage 3. Each stage builds off of the stage before it and affordability is usually a factor for many to consider as they throw money at their motors to increase the horse power. If you just go to a bigger piston, there will be an increase in horse power, but without the stage 1 to help unlock the potential of the bigger motor, you really will be missing some of the benefits. It’s your bike and it’s your money and ultimately you will need to make the decision as to what direction you want to go. Good luck with you choice and ride safe out there!

I would do the stage 1 first. Get the pipes, air cleaner and re-map the Fuel Injection. Then give Dan at NRHS a call and decide which of their 1250 conversion kits you want. I just did that conversion about a month ago and love it! You will need to have the Fuel Injection adjusted again once you increase the engine size and combustion ratio.
