If you want to pick the value yourself Progressive is the only company that will let you pick the value of the bike. They call it Agreed Value (stated value) and all that means is that you will pick the value say $10,000 and the deductable, then in the event of a total loss you would get paid the Agreed amount less the deductable.
The premiums are higher but worth it ! I had my 1999 FatBoy insured for $18,500 and it was totaled, after the adjuster inspected the bike he came back the next day, gave me a check for $18,000 and then Progressive took the bike. That is how good it is when you have the Agreed value.

I wish I could insure it in the states.
47 yr old, clean record, full coverage & 1500 in accessories W/ 500.00 deductable = $916.00 per year.
Thinking of going to liability only this year @ $197.00, after all we only get to ride about 6 months a year, kinda risky though.

Understand that the varying differences in premiums are due to a number of differences. Of course each company has different premiums, but the other factor is the level of coverage. What deductible, whether it's stated value or booked value, and level of medical to name a few. You need to make sure that when you're shopping your insurance that you compare apples to apples and not just rates.
My wife helped a friend of our recently. He thought he was saving some money only to find out he was actually paying more when he compared apples to apples. His premium was less than what he had been paying but his coverage was half of what it was. When he upped his coverage with the new company, it was actually more.
Understand that some agents are like cars salesmen. They can manipulate coverage to a premium. You don't really get good coverage, but you do get the premium you want.
Progressive is a very good company and can offer inexpensive coverage because they really don't have the middleman know as agents. That's a good thing.
We have American Family. My wife works in insurance (not for AmFam) and knew how to shop insurance. Progressive was cheaper, but when it came to my son being hit three years ago by a lady running a red lite, the little bit more we paid in premiums to AmFam was worth it as our agent really went to bat for us. He recently lost control of his truck in a blizzard and totaled his truck. She really took care of us again and we received an awesome settlement.

I am an insurance broker and a new rider in NYC. I think most people do not understand what they are buying when it comes to insuance - they are just looking to meet the state minimum requirements at the lowest price.

This is an important decision that can significantly impact you life if you have a claim. The single most important coverage on you policy has not even been mentioned by anyone in this string and that is the liability limit you carry. It is the first coverage identified on your policy and the coverage required by law.

Liability coverage covers you for 3rd party claims - that is, if you damage or injure someone else and they sue you, what are you covered for. If you get in an accident and someone dies or is disabled you can be sued for big money that can bankrupt you. State minimum limits are typically $25,000/$50,000 and that will barely scratch the surface if this happens.

Buy the most you can afford and do it from an agent you trust.

I have a $300,000 liaiblity limit, $3000 for accessories and a $100 comp/collision deductible. I live in Manhattan and pay $470 annually with Progressive. I am 41, ride a 2008 XL883 and have a clean driving record.

How much you insure for is far less important than if the insurance company will honor their side of the deal. Good luck to those with Progressive or GEICO.
