Default Starting to convert to 1200

Hi Everyone,
I don't see many conversions on '01-'03 Sporties. Since no kit was made for those years, I am trying to educate myself on what parts are going to be needed. I would like to keep it all SE.
So far I purchased
80290-99A SE II slip on mufflers slash down
29041-88B SE HF air filter kit with K&N air filter
I am going to need to get pistons either 22698-01,22699-01, or 22700-01
Why choose one over the other? I am having the dealer supply and install but am confused if there are a bunch of options or is there just one. Can you point me in the right direction?

01-03' will be the same kit as for i beleive all the way back to 87 or 89, and all the 90's models are definately the same for the top end of the motor. I can't speak for the SE pistons as I used CP pistons from nhrs, but I would assume the difference might be for different compression ratios on the se pistons, maybe someone else will chime in with info on those.

Definately check NRHS, they are a sponsor on the Harley XL Forum, you will find a lot of good information on doing a conversion.

If you want to stick to SE parts and the dealer is going to do the install, they should point you in the right direction. If they don't know....find another dealer!

I would also highly recommend NRHS, but that won't be Screamin Eagle parts. It will be better, and less expensive, but it won't be SE

I have to agree with the others. There's numerous kits out there, and the SE kit is the basic conversion kit that the dealer will sell at an inflated price. You could always check out NRHS, Zippers, etc.

Guess I should start out by finding out how much this will cost. LOL. I figured under 2k installed. Is that reasonable? I could bring after market kits and have the dealer install them? What if something goes wrong? Wouldn't that create a huge headache for me? I don't like headaches.

Screamin Eagle installed at the dealer will be right around $2k. NRHS or other kit, installed at an Independent Shop probably be about half that cost.

I just did the NRHS conversion, the kit was $700 plus shipping. About $75 for all the other gaskets that aren't included in the kit. Install time was about 6 hours, and a professional wrench should be able to do the job in half as much time. So, do the math on the labor cost.

Give Buell a look. I know they aren't in busness anymore but there are bound to be enough parts to do an upgrade for your scoot. When i did mine, I used buell and was happy as a clam.

All you really need is a set of reverse dome pistons and someone to bore your cylinders. You have to use reverse dome pistons to keep the compression ratio correct, Harley builds these as well as Wisco and Kieth Black.
If you want more than a basic build then purchase a complete kit from 1 supplier so everything works together.
