Default Clean out the gas tank

I have a 95 Sporty with the original tank on it. I recently had to change petcocks. When I pulled the old one out of the tank the screen on it had a lot of black crusty particles on it. Is there a way to totally clean the loose material out of the tank?
Thanks

Sounds like your tank has started to or continued to rust from the inside out. Several different companies sell kits that treat and seal the inside of the tank. Bill Hirsch I think sells a great product that I have had experience with. It's a 3 stage process that removes the rust, etches the bare inside of the tank and finally seals the bare inside. It does require you to take the tank off and it is quite time consuming but works wonders.

Some people have success with taking the tank off the bike, putting some nuts and bolts or washers or pennies inside the tank then sealing the holes and shaking vigorously to remove the rust on the inside. This can be done in addition to the products people sell to treat and seal the inside of the tank. I would advise searching google or this database for a step by step process. HTH

....another route that you can take is to look for a good used tank and replace it, then paint to match. I kind of killed 2 birds with one stone when i did it because my tank didnt have any emblems on it. So the guy that painted my tank also airbrushed nice a lookin Harley logo on it.

Yeah .... i need to update my sig pic
