Default buying a sporster

Hey first time posting here and looking into buying my first bike love riding but never owned one anyway...

I was wondering what the value or at least a starting point to negotiate and pros of cons of a bike this customized are. I was told buying a bike with this much done to it is just not a good idea. Just looking for more opinions. Thanks in advance.

Here is the add.

1996 sporty frame and then had all custom tin , The motor was an 883 but has since been reworked to roughly 1300 cc and is close to 100 horse , Bike is very fast , Fat bob tank custom cut front and rear fenders , Drag bars , Wide glide frontend , Fat boy wheels , Custom harley seat , Recent and not in pic rear air shocks , belt drive , Motor has roughly 7000 miles on it , All the tin is currently at the paint shop being re painted , Foward controls ..New lowering kit , Bike runs awesome , Roughly 10,000$ in it

Just bought my first bike myself so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I'm guessing the general reaction to your question is going to be find something a little more suitable for a new rider. 100 hp on a sportster frame is quite a bit and custom painted tins means it will be that much more painful if you put it down...not to mention expensive to get it fixed if they are painted with any sort of design. On top of that, I don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but I'm guessing (guessing being the key word) that a bike with that much work done to it might be a little tempramental.

If it was me, for whatever it's worth...I would find something without quite so much work done to it. If you are set on a harley, try a to go with a newer model that at least has rubber mounts.

Start by asking the guy how much he wants. Let us know and we can help from there. Get what you want as if you don't you'll never be happy.

I would be trading straight up for my 1978 corvette worth 6-6,500.

IMO, for $6,000 - $6,500 you could probably find a clean, low mileage 07 or 08 1200 Sporty with some extras.

100 hp is like the holy grail for sportsters. I would ask for a dyno sheet to support that claim.

Then I would get the VIN and run it on this website to see if it shows to be a salvage bike or stolen.
https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud...check/vincheck

Then I would research NADA and Kelly Blue Book. The retail for a basic '96 1200 is a little less than $4K on KBB, so I wouldn't make any decisions until you can validate the value.

That gets you a foundation of information. Your unknowns are who did the work and how good were they. If they were not good, my take is that you will be getting a bucket of problems.

I second that. I have seen '07 - '09's going for that around here all the time.

Very good advice, Sportster engines making 75-80 hp tend to be reliable and can last a long time. When you start making 100hp the engine life can be very short.
