Default Too much oil?

I just picked up my Sportster and they just serviced it. I have noticed that oil is coming out of my fill cap and running down the side of the tank. What is the proper oil level and if it is overfilled will it mess my bike up?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

First, take it back to the dealer that did your service and tell them to fix it! Second, for future reference, always check the "0" ring on the oil cap and make sure it is lubricated and not cracked. If it does not seat and seal properly, you will leak oil at the cap.

Have you checked the hot oil level on the dipstick to see what it reads?

It might be a bad gasket, or it could be overfilled. Hard to tell without checking the actual oil level in the tank.

I try to keep my hot oil level at, or just slightly below the halfway mark of the dipstick.

You don't want to overfill the tank.

Man I would take it back to whoever serviced it and rip them a new "O ring"

mine started leaking also, soon after an oil change, but i had switched to the temperature dipstick. POS! switched back to the original and no problem since then. Sounds like the o-ring isn't seating right. Either get a new one, or yours doesn't like to be near full.

Your right those temperature dipsticks or a POS. My son put one on his and had leaks and a freind of his put one on his and had leaks to. Son had to buy a stock dipstick for his last year when we went to Sturgis to stop the leaking.

If when "they" filled the oil tank if they missed the actual tank there will be oil seeping down behind the cover and evident on the rubber lines and visible on the other side near the bottom. This I noticed when I missed the tank hole one time.

To answer your question... yes, too much oil can be as bad as too little. It's such an easy fix.... just open the drain tube and let some out.

There has been several times I've over filled mine just a tad had the same problem as you discribed, but I just pulled the plug and let a little out... problem solved.

Harley's 3.6 quarts less the 4 oz for the filter is a pain.... but not a big problem.
