Default RPM's ?

Hi. So this is my first post after introducing myself in the new members area. Please forgive me if this is a stupid question. I have been lurking for a while gettin' a feel for the place. But I haven't seen much info about revs. I have an '08 nightster that I got this summer. After riding Yams for 30 plus yrs, this is my first HD. It's a way different ride than what I'm used to. So, there's no tach. How do I know what revs i'm turning at what speeds? I guess it doesn't really matter, cause you know you're in a good range if you're not lugging it, or not hitting the rev limiter. But normally, what are the shift points and what are the revs at those points? I read so many people wishing for a 6th gear. Honestly I don't think I need it. A gear indicator would be useful though. Oh, and since I'm in the northeast, woke up to this today:

I'm not exactly what the limiter is set at on the newer bikes, but in 1st gear at the rev limiter your close to 6K. I know I hit the rev limiter at about 50 mph in 1st. I just learned to listen to my engine to figure out when to shift.

I hear what you are saying. I've been looking at tach's most of my adult life. I miss having a tach on my Sportster big time. I do know that they sell digital tachs as an add on but can't speak as to how they perform.

I don't want to add a tach if I don't have to, but I'd like to know my power band. This chart is perfect. Now I don't need a tach. Money saved for other things.

It's funny though, I said I'd like a gear position indicator, but really, I'm just used to a different machine. Once I get familiar with the old 5 speed again, I won't need that either. Right now though, I'm counting the gears as I upshift. I laugh to myself how ridiculous it is, but it won't take long to make the adjustment.
