How much comfort do you loose?
#11
In the pic above (goinsideways136), it looks like the spring stay compressed during the ride. How much do you weigh, goinsideways136? Do you guys think a stiffer spring wound stay "springy" during the ride? How's the "slide" factor on these seats? I've heard of guys riding journeys with these seats, but after hearing about kidney belts and back aches I need to do this right. I'm 100% sure I'm going with a Biltwell 10" strut, but still not sure what type of "spring" and seat. More advise helps, thanks guys.

I can speak to this issue. Ive got a bike with each of these set ups: Heres what Ive got
1: 02 sportster with biltwell struts, and lepera bare bones solo seat. (seat mounted to frame.)
2: Sucker puch sallys rigid bobber with spring seat. (3" springs)
3: Iron 883 with stock suspension.
A couple things to note:
1: if your running struts. A spring seat will really help.
2: Running a spring seat with shocks looks like you have no idea what your doing.
3" Springs come in different firmness.
4: As far as back pain goes. Struts will cause back pain, but the pain will greatly increase the farther forward your bars are or the more your back is arched forward.
5: When looking for a seat frame for a spring seat, you want to look for one with a bigger lip on back to avoid splipping off. My sucker punch has a basic seat pan and I almost fly off it whn I hit the gas.
6:Id buy the struts and ride em for a month with the stock seat before investing into the whole seat part, that way you could switch back if you wanted with minimal cost.
Hope this helps

b. luke,
#6 sounds like a good plan. Which seat manufacturer builds a higher back lip to prevent slipping? Will I have to go custom? When buying solo kits, do they give you options for different stiffness of springs? I want to avoid welding a permanent bung or solo set up. Which solo kit do you guys recommend? I've looked at West-Eagle and it looks great. Any thing else out there for sportys?

I have a West Eagle seat that has a big lip. I've never felt like I would slip back under any circumstance. I also have the 2" springs and weigh around 150. Heavy bumps bottom out but usually it's a pretty smooth ride. I didn't know about weight specific springs. I put mine in the oven on 450 for 30 minutes or so then stuck them between my seat bolts & frame bracket bolts & sat on it until they were cool to the touch.
I made a plate that bolts to my stock fender/frame bolt & is my lower spring bolt bracket.
