Default 1K service should I take it to the Dealer?

I just picked up a 08 Nightster that had 464 miles on it and has worked fine for the other 600 I put on it. The bike is out of Warr so I want to get some advice on whether or not to have the 1k service done at the dealer or is this something I can do. I can change the oils both Primary and eng but what else are they doing for the 2-3 hrs and $260.
I know I want synth oils so recomendations for weight and type will be smiled upon.
Thanks

If you got the Owners Manual with the bike, the service schedule is in the back of the book. It details what is to be done at each interval. Some of the items are; re-torquing all critical fasteners, primary chain adjustment and clutch adjustment.

By all means, if you have the Service Manual and necessary tools, do it yourself. If you don't have the stuff, buy it. You'll cover the costs with what you save by doing it yourself.

I also recommend the Fix My Hog DVD, it walks you through all of the routine service procedures. About $45.00

Thanks
For the motor, I use and recommend Mobil-1 15w-50 syn. You can get it at Walmart in a 5 quart jug for about $23.00. It's NOT labeled as a V-Twin oil, but it tests right up there with the expensive "boutique" V-Twin labeled stuff.

For the Primary/Tranny, I use Mobil-1 75-90 syn Gear Oil. I get that at Autozone for about $9.00. It takes exactly 1 quart for the change.

i just did my own 1k service at 2700 miles...changed the primary fluid, oil, adjusted the clutch and throttle and changed plugs...it cost me a whole $35 and about an hour and a half

we recently priced the 1k mile service at RGV Harley in McAllen at $380

YES, the first service I always let the dealer do, there is a list as long as your arm of things that need done the first time.
