Is that an 883 or 1200? I have an XL883 and I'm wondering myself if I shouldn't try 89 octane.
I seem to have a lot of coughs coming out of the exhaust as well as the carb.

RE: does anyone else have a 2006 with carb cough?
My 06C has had carb cough since day one and I've about decided it's not ever going to be cured. It came from the factory with a 42/180 jet combo.
At 1k, I put SEII's and the SE high flow air filter on myself, then had the dealer rejet for me during their 1k service. They put in a 45 slow jet and did not change the main jet. Was coughing on the way home from the 1k service. Took it back the next day. They en-richen it a bit and up'ed the idle some. Still, coughs!
Next I played with the idle enrichment screw (the one that is covered up from the factory) and could not tune out the low speed coughing so I talked to the dealer some more. They said that the main jet is fine and that the 45 low should work, but some bikes just won't ever be cough free. Wonderful.
So I ordered up a 46 low and a 185 main off of Ebay for less than $15 to the door. Put them in a couple of days ago and even with this big 46 jet, my bike is still getting an occasional cough at low rpm's. I've tuned that idle mixture screw from 2 turns out to 4 in 1/4 turn increments and it makes no difference.
I give up!

My 05 1200C does it AND I have had it die in the middle of two intersections! I have heard the same thing it is running too lean. However with only981 miles on it when I bought it it had already had the SEII installed by the dealer it seams THEY would have tuned it properly? I jus rev it a little BEFORE pulling out into traffic, but I will look into richening it up.

It is going in Monday for the 1000 mile check up and I told them they need to get the carb farts to quit.
We will see...

Mine had the cough for a while. It was when the bike had 0-1200 miles on it. The only way to cure it was to run with the choke out thus fouling the plugs; catch-22. Once I had it in for it's 1000 mile service it stopped. It will do it slightly in cold weather but only if I don't have the choke out far enough. You have to find the balance point. If yours is really bad then the dealer needs to do some adjusting.

I have had pretty good luck with the carb not farting much anymore, dh did just adjust the idle screw. Ihave put on cycle shack slipon about the same time so maybe that helps. I just run the first 2miles with the enricher out about 1/4 to 1/2 and then push it in and so far so good.
