Same thing happened to me when I changed bars on my XR. Seems to be quite common. If you're not ready for it, you WILL bust the end off the plunger. The replacement is about $60 from the dealer, and it comes with a length of wire which you need to splice in. No 'plug-and-play'.
I found it much easier to just melt the solder off the new and old switch to remove the wires , then resolder the old wires back on the new switch.
excellent all thanks for the help. when replacing the control levers i was "reading the instructions" kinda half assed. i saw the small pie e of cardboard but threw that out pretty much immediately haha. guess i wish i hadn't. thanks for the assistance
If you can't tell if your bike needs brakes or not sell it now before you kill yourself or some one else, by the way, it should be the switch in the brake lever. HOLLYWOOD
thanks hollywood, appreciate u being so cool. So i guess i shouldnt ask a question to anyone on here unless i need to hear some smart *** comment. I've been riding a year or so, just trying to learn as much as i can as i go u know. God forbid i dont know about a brake issue i have not experienced before. but before i kill myself riding cause i dont know anything ill just sell my bike. must have been nice being born knowing everything and u didnt have to learn anything along the way. But thanks so much for the help.
Hey, I like your tag. Its amazing to see how people get around the tag censors. I once saw on a car in Calif."PHAQUE", My brother owns a 1969 Jaguar XKE and figured since a Jag is a cat , wanted his tag to say "69 *****", needless to say that one got censored, lol.

I only went in 6 or 8 inches into the loom.. Pulling the whole assembly apart, I found it to be quite the PITA. Why HD doesn't update their **** to at least last century's technology is beyond me. The ***** on the end of the cables...I don't think anyone else has done it that way for 40 years.. They wouldn't even need to re-design it.. They use Showa suspension for Pete's sake.. They could just use Nissin or Brembo Master's, and bingo-boffo, none of us would be replacing switches, and the thing would probably weigh a pound less.
Then again, I don't know if anybody actually produces anything for 1" bars..
