Aftermarket S&S carb questions
so ive been lookin into an S & S carb for my 90 1200 for 2 reasons:
1: ive heard they're the best bang for the buck and theyre easy to tune
2: every time ive told the shop i want to do some work this winter, and i tell them i have a factory carb, theyre response is somewhere along the lines or "ewwww" or "oh boy.... well ok"
so my questions are this, there's the super E and super G. a guy i work with rides a fatboy and he told me that you need to know the horsepower of your bike to figure out if the E or G is the one you want. Im gonna assume that a stock 1200 will use the E (1 7/8") carb. Has anyone run this carb on an older sporty like mine? its it worth the 3 or 400 im gonna spend on it, or should i just dial in the stock carb? ive got full drag pipes now, which will most likely come off this winter in favor of some slightly quieter pipes (but still a full system, not slip on) any pointers, hints, cautions i should be aware of? thanks.

I have a super E on my 97. I also have 2" drags with thunder monster baffles. The combo work pretty good. runs strong and sounds good. If you like a loud bike. The pipes with out the baffles sounded like crap. That said, if the bike had not come with both the pipes and the carb I would not shell out the money for ether. The S&S is a racing carb and really doesn't come in to it's own untill you really crank it on. But it does what is was made to do, supply copious amounts of air/fuel to the intake port and looks real cool doing it. Sportsters have great cams and pull harder in the upper RPMs with more fuel.

Well you have a 44mm CV carb on your bike from the factory and it is one of the easiest carbs to tune, for a 1200 you just need a 45 slow jet and a 180 main jet if you have upgraded the air cleaner and the exhaust.
With the age of your bike it would pay to pull the carb and take it apart and clean it real well at the same time, this is a fairly simple task as there aren't many parts to your carb.
Any mech that says O-BOY about a CV is the last person you want working on your bike. The CV is top of the line for Harley's used on the street and the S&S is an antique best left for old Iron Heads and Shovels as they had a really crappy carb from the factory.
There is no reason in hell for purchasing a new carb it will NOT imporove your performance. I've used S&S and Mikuni and sometimes you will get a little better throttle responce but no real differance in driveability and definately no more HP.
