not really, if yr runnin a passenger offten it might be important so there pant leg doesn't get sucked in but besides that....nope.

some will say it will keep rocks and **** from getting into the pully or debris hitting you but i really think thats a bunch a bull ****. i've never had an issue.

don't forget to remove both the upper and lower for a better look....and while yr at it remove the pully cover, its like 3 bolts and makes it look better too

I ride 2-up all the time with no issues. Been that way for over something like three/+ years. The passenger would have to have extra extra wide bell bottoms on.....Atleast when I measured with my GF's foot on the passenger peg with wide bottomed pants on, she needed to add another 4+ inches of material to her pant leg before it would get close to the front pulley & belt to where it could get caught in there. Gotta agree with you on the BS thang on chit gettin in the belt & pulley.

Lower is easy, three bolts. A little tricky to get to, but doable.

But if you want to remove the upper, you have to undo the bolt on the rear shock. The upper chain guard is attatched under the nut holding the shock on.

Well, it IS three bolts...

Providing you've also already removed your rear pipe.

You can remove the 3 bolts easily, but you won't be able to remove the pully cover with the pipe in place.

I'm telling you this all from the past hour of experience, since I was inspired this morning to do some wrenching on my Iron, also.

A rock kicking and ruining your belt would be one disadvantage.

Depends on where you ride the most. I run on just as many gravel and dirt roads as I do pavement. I just assume leave it on.

I've been running my bike without the belt guards for quite some time with no issues. My sig pic is even taken on a gravel road. I will just continue to keep my fingers crossed. IMO the bike looks better without them.

to the left of your cam cover behind the exhaust. its the cover that 'covers' the front pulley...where the belt loops around but is hidden. thats the pulley cover.

and if you don't ride in gravel much, there are no disadvantages to taking the guards off.
