Coolness to Dollar ratio equals the coozer Potential vs. Money and Time spent to change a belt.
Like so many other mods, do what you want.
My Softail belt has a hole in it from a pebble about 4 years/28,000 miles ago - the gaurds were/are in place. I like the guards for now, but I could change my mind. And gravel roads don't scare me.

Another key to remember is that you must replace the sprocket cover with some type of spacer on the long carriage bolt, or you will ruin your exhaust and it's other mounting points. Can your passenger catch her pant leg on the belt and/or sprocket? Absolutely! Will she? I seriously doubt it. There is a ton of room there, and she would have to have massive bell bottoms on for there to even be a remote possibility of any mischance.
