Default Bike still not running after plugs.....

So to refresh you all of my saga... A guy borrowed my bike (2001 1200 sporty) ran it out of gas, and the reserve out of gas. Filled it up.... (took him awhile to get it started again) brought it back to me. Hour later I took it for a ride and it died ( no spitting and sputtering, just died ) 2 times on me... I was able to start it after those two times. The third time it died ( 45mph in third ) I could not get it started again. Turns over but does not fire.

Cleaned the tank, petcock, filter, carb out. Still doesn't start, just turns over. Replaced the plugs today.... didn't fix it. There is no spark from the plugs. So is the next bet a coil???? And if so, is there a way to test the coil to see if it's any good before replacing it? I'd love any more suggestions... I just hate to take it to a dealer (and yes, I will be billing this guy if it goes to the dealer). Thanks...

I did the same thing to my bike when I got it last year. I sucked up some rust from the tank into the carb. I cleaned the tank and put on a 7 dollar gas filter and cleaned the hole carb out no big deal. The bike should have fired right up theres no way he hurt that bike running out of fuel. Other then a drop of rust u may have picked up in the carb it should be fine. The coil or wires could be shot what about the battery? All the cranking may have it low try jumping it with a car. Try taking out one plug hook up the wire to it crank her over and hold the plug and wire in ur hand get a look at if u have a good spark

I'm not sure why you started a new thread on the same problem. We could have kept better track of what you've done if this was in that thread. Did you check the plug wire connections at the coil like I suggested in your other thread? Don't just look at them and say yes, they look good. You need to actually pull them off, slide the rubber cover back & re-install the wires so YOU here it click/pop into the connector. Also, remove the 90* connections, give the connector on the end of the wire a little squeeze with either your fingers or a pair of pliers and then re-install. Trust me.....the 90* connection gave me the exact same syptoms a few times that your bike is giving you. I was rolling down the road and all of a sudden it shut down making me coast to the side of the road. Started fidgeting with wires while trying to start the bike......Giggled the 90* connector & bang....The bike fired. It's been the cause of other people's problems too.

And dont hold the spark plug wire and plug in hand while starting it , Get a buddy and have him hold the plug to the tip of his tongue and see if you get spark...

The main issue with jumping it from a cars battery is to make sure the car is NOT running.

+1 12 volts is 12 volts, but a running car is going to put out enough amps to spike your system, or possibly even fry some wires, not worth it!! But if it's turning over fine, and not slowing down, lights aren't going way dim, I doubt it's the battery. I would however make sure the battery cables are tight, and the hot to the coil too.

+1 on checking for spark, and R&R plug wires, may as well go buy a new set anyway, might not help, surely can't hurt.
